There are certain rules and regulations when it comes to cutting the pine, cypress and oak trees within Carmel. The Forestry Department oversees the trees of Carmel and will only allow the trimming of trees. Residents are not allowed to take any limbs off without getting a permit first from the Forestry Department. An Arborist has to come out and determine the health of the tree then they get to determine if the permit should be granted. Also, the water is crucial to Carmel. The area is in a drought situation so when a home is purchased, the city does not allow for additional bathrooms to be installed into the home. There are very strict guidelines and permits to be followed when selling homes in Carmel to make sure additional bathrooms, laundry rooms and wet bars have not been installed without a the proper water permits. If any of the above are installed without a permit, they will need to be removed before the final sale of the property. And lastly, the historic homes of Carmel are held sacred. If you purchase a “historic” home that is registered with the town, there are limitations to what you can do to your home because the town wants to keep its authentic charm and architecture. On the positive side, if you do own a historic home, the town provides you with additional property tax savings each year.
